Air conditioning problems.

Post by patcal »

I hope this isn't too long. This in on my 98 S70 GLT. The air conditioner has worked fine since I got it. The recirculation light & A/C light has always blinked for the first 30 seconds after starting the car & would then go out. I knew the ECC temp sensor was bad by reading the codes. Well the other day the A/C light started blinking all the time. I replaced the sensor & re-scanned for codes & all are clear. The A/C light is still on. I re-calibrated the motors but the light is still on & it seems that the air mode will not change. The air seems to be coming out a little in every vent but not very much flow. Freon is full. I am a bit lost. Any help would be appreciated.

Blinking light on a pre-1999 ECC is an error indicator. You need to use a scan tool that can read the ECC codes. What are you using for a scan tool?

I was using 850obd2. It can read the ECC codes. Tomorrow I am going to hook up my laptop with VOL-FCR. Hopefully it will give me some more info.

I hooked up VOL-FCR & there were no codes but the dampers are not self-adjusting. The scanner shows the switch is working in all positions but the dampers are not moving.

Hmm.. There manual says before ECC is programmed it flashes greens and is slightly limited operation. If you can check the ECC module from bad corroded solders specially if there is memory chip if it waits to read what is drivers position and thats why it doesn't work and is stuck. Its wild guess. I have tried look if get in my hands one ECC module to tinker round it as some been just tried run calibration when not necessary and if there is any bad damper position motor it gets stuck and so not fun situation. Added lately warnings about it only when you can still reach all components easily.

In 850OBDII in Service terminal you can try write and send "ECC1" and send back log of it as it goes loop to read all possible Data blocks if i can ever help more in these in future.

Well, I looked at it again today. I removed the glove box & tried to move the controls with the switch. None of the damper motors moved. The main blower works at all speeds so it's not that. I tested fuses & all are good. I am leaning toward the main ECC control unit. I can't believe all the dampers failed at the same time.

Final follow up. It was the ECC control panel. Got one for $30 & everything is fine again. Thanks.

Did you try cleaning the ECC connectors before you replaced the ECC?
Sometimes just resetting a electrical connector will exterminate the Gremlins.

No. I did not think of that. I did try to disconnect & reconnect the plugs to no avail.
