Group,
It was idling in the driveway. Then shut it off for a few minutes, then when I tried to start it, it wouldn't.
When I crank, I get spark and fuel, but it doesn't run, doesn't even stumble or studder.
I checked for spark and fuel fuel. Lost, any Ideas?

First thought - timing belt has gone just after engine was stopped. This happened to me some years ago with a Ford van and happened recently to my son's car. In both cases we switched off the engine and it would not re-start.

Thanks for the reply Bill,
Got up this morning and put the fuel line back on the injector rail and charged the battery and, wha-la it fired. It drives like nothing happened.
All I can think, is my daughter sat in the car with the ignition on listeneing to the radio for awhile after turning the engine off, thus draining the battery and allowing the fuel pump(s) to keep the cylinders and plugs wet!?
I've had my 85 740 timing belt go and familiar with the symptoms. (a no compression crank)

I glad to hear the car is running again. If this periodic "no start" condition continues, search this forum for my posts on fuel pumps. If you need clarification on anything I posted, please let me know. If you can't find the posts, let me know and I will send them to you.
We have had our 1986 740 GLE for two and half years now. We have logged 16,000 miles on it with the clock turning 218,000 last week. I have driven it over 3,000 miles in the last two months alone, which has included two round trips from San Francisco to Los Angeles. It gets around 25 miles to the gallon on the highway and cruises the flats of Interstate 5 at 85 mph without protest. Just don't ask it to climb the Grapevine in fourth gear, it won't. I have to drop it into third to maintain my speed up that hill. By the way, it is a four-speed automatic (ZF). This has been the best $1,000 car I have ever owned.
