Loud bang from transmission area. Is my driveshaft supposed to do this

Post by renegade420 »

2005 s60 R 145000 miles. Long story short. I was at a dead stop sitting on an incline and i went to gas it and out of nowhere heard i nice loud bang from underneath the car. Car went into limp mode(kept me in 5th) but what was weird is when i switched it to the 'manual' drive mode (aka the slap shifter thingy) the car acted just fine, full power and all but not wanting to risk anything, I slowly scooted back home. I lifted the car up by front wheels and saw that my front drivers side wheel would spin freely in park. I have 2 s60R (the '05 and an '06) so went over to check if my other cars front driver wheel spun with both front wheels off the ground and it did so im assuming thats normal. But I also noticed that on the trouble car, that with the front wheels off the ground and the back wheels on the ground, car in park, I can freely spin the driveshaft (the shaft protruding from the angle gear to the rear of the car. Are these symptoms of a bad angle gear? I was suspecting my trans but like I said, I was able to drive just fine in manual mode. Any thoughts?

It sounds like the driveshaft and angle gear went through unscheduled rapid disconnection, but my experience with AWD is extremely limited.

When the engine is off, the Haldex unit is disengaged and the rear wheels are not connected to the driveshaft. Still, the driveshaft would be connected to the angle gear and, if spun, the front wheels should counter-rotate.

I'd put the vehicle up on blocks at all four wheels, start it, and put it in drive. All four wheels should turn (though possibly at different rates depending on how worn your brakes are.) If not, then you know you have a driveline problem. If all four turn, then start looking for worn mounts and bushings.
