No stop/limiter destroying driver side cv axel

Post by wool »

this is regarding a 2004 xc70. I posted earlier that Ive replaced the driver-side cv axel three times in the last several months.
BUT it might be something else. I read about steering stops or lack of. The lower control arm does not have a stop when I make a sharp turn (like parking) the steering will pull to a full lock position and won't return on its own. This began when I replaced the steering rack This 04 xc70 does not have a stop on the lower control arm or on the knuckle. I replaced the steering rack last year. Is there supposed to be a limiter/stop on the rack? Do new racks come with it or is that another part that needs to be added to the rack? I'm fairly certain this full lock turn is binding the CV. thanks

I had a similar issue with my steering "self steering" to full lock on tight turns. I believe this is a caster/ alignment issue. I don't know the condition of your car's front end components but this could be: worn subframe bushings, strut mounts, or incorrect strut geometry due to aftermarket struts, also bad alignment owing to incorrect caster.
This issue went away after I replaced pretty much my entire front end with OEM components and got a good alignment.
I would jack the car up and get in there with a prybar and find out whats worn out. There's an oblong hole in the driver's rear subframe bushing that I believe is used to adjust rough caster at the factory during assembly, the Volvo replacement bushings do not have this oblong hole. Something is worn out or out of adjustment......you just have to find it.
