['98 V70 Base] Help Identify This Hose & Line

['98 V70 Base] Help Identify This Hose & Line

A beautiful '98 V70 Base automatic model (115k miles) just fell in my lap, and I'm working on getting it to stage 0 for my parent to drive. There are some age-related areas of dry-rot, and a little bit of upstate-NY underbody rust, but the drive is great, and this wagon is getting 25 to the gallon. Nice. 8)

I noticed a cracking rubber vacuum(?) hose coming out of the manifold, going to a check valve in the front - I consulted the vacuum diagram, Chilton's manual, and these forums - and could not positively identify its specific part # or reference.

Same story with this thin black plastic / vinyl line that totally broke off from the top port of my air box; I'm not even sure where it is supposed to terminate.

I called FCP Groton and sent over the below photos, but they were puzzled and could not offer any identification. :?

Surely someone knows what these are referred to as, size references, and perhaps even the part numbers?


Most likely, once I know what to order, I'm going to perform the PCV service and replace as many hoses as I can, including these. Any help is greatly appreciated.

That’s the vacuum supply for the air door which blends warm air from the exhaust manifold ( big fat shiny elephant hose) or cool air from the front of the car.

The vacuum motor sits hidden underneath the Air cleaner. One line runs from the vacuum motor up to thr nipple on the air cleaner. The other Nipple line runs to the intake manifold to supply vacuum.

The two nipple attachment is the thermostat that allows vacuum to Pass based on the air temperature in the air clesner box

It’s not rare to find the stock hard lines with rubber ends replaced with small rubber hose

You are lucky. Normally, you have to at least be a Viscount, but we make exceptions for good behavior

According to the Haynes UK manual, the line coming off the manifold and running to the driver's side is the vacuum line to the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. It's a black rubber line with the yellow stripe, 13" long, 1/2" OD, 5/16" ID (roughly). Printing on the hose says the part number, 981583, and "ID 3,5 1134 17W36" in case those are specifications. It is held on with an Oetiker 145 (14.5 mm) ear clamp.

On my 2000 V70 with 200k mi and my previous 2000 V70 with 275k mi, that line looked flaky. While doing my PCV cleaning, I wanted to replace it like I'm doing for other rubber hoses. Best info I could find was on the intake manifold diagram that it might be part 981583. But the description says it's 9" and I need 13".

I had my local dealership call Volvo about it. Their reply was to ignore the 9", that you'd get a substantial length with the order. The dealership went ahead and ordered it for me along with some other stuff. When I went to pick it up, they charged me $60 for the line!! Note, it's $37 list and $29 (plus lots of shipping) at VolvoPartsWebStore. I was about to refuse the item, but I rely on the dealership to get me hard-to-find parts quickly, so I didn't want to annoy them. That's $30 spent toward goodwill.

Though the outside of the line is flaky, I don't know if the line is failing or needs replacing. For $30 (or $60!), that's an expensive preventative. If we knew the detailed specifications of the hose (ie: how much vacuum pressure can it handle, etc), surely we could get a generic replacement elsewhere.
