Thoughts on Volvo mudflaps for an XC?

Post by Blacklab467 »

Just putting together an order with FCP Euro and wondered if I should throw in a set of OEM mudflaps? What has been your experience with them? I like the way they look and functionality of them, my only concern is that we get a lot of snow here and I thought that they may cause snow/salty slush to accumulate too much. Opinions please.

My brother threw mudflaps on his E30 and his style points were literally unmatched.

...sorry :P I'm curious of peoples' experience as well, always dug the look and potential utility. Almost ordered them 4 separate times.

10 MVS points for E30 reference!

Blacklab - they might look cool and functional and kind of retro on an XC - like a 122 wagon with Volvo script mudflats.

Mudflaps on my XC70. i think it came with the volvo rivets but i decided to use volvo self tapping screws with the metal clips because i can remove them easier. either way i recommend using washers.

I also love them, I put them on 3/4 of the P2’s. The 01 I haven’t because it has the weird dark blue (faded?) plastic cladding and I don’t believe I’ve ever seen the factory flaps offered in that color. With the flaps installed, it sure seems like the car stays clean longer.

Recently, in an attempt to mitigate the accumulation of snow in the rear wheels I have been installing these “dirt deflectors”, as Volvo calls them. It’s super vexing to me to drive through snowy conditions (that part I love), park, then begin the next days drive & instantly be greeted with both rear wheels out of balance. For those who don’t live in a climate such as ours, snow accumulates in the rear wheels. When you park, heat coming off the car melts (somewhat) the snow. That slush then moves to the lowest point and invariably freezes. I keep rubber mallets in all the cars for this exact reason; so the driver can stop the car and “shock” the wheels with a couple blows. Usually between that, and fishing the handle around between the spokes, you can free the rears of their wobbly countenance.

Anyhow, I saw these in a microfiche a few weeks ago & figured they’d be worth a shot. For $10ish USD per deflector, couldn’t really go wrong. Install is very easy, but you do need to drill 1 hole per deflector.

Since installing them, we unfortunately haven’t had much of the frozen precipitation I was hoping to test the flaps with. We have had a few dusting a of a few inches, which I suppose is enough to count for something. I don’t think I’m making it up, but I haven’t seen much, if any, accumulation since installing them. I do believe they could be in harms way if you are avidly traversing rough terrain.
