Is it time for a new automatic gearbox ?

Post by greffel »

Big problem today with my Volvo S60 2.5T AWD :(

Driving along when the car suddenly lost drive, just like I would shift to neutral.
Now If I wait for a while the car works like normal for a couple of minutes and then loses forward and backward

1. The oil is in good condition and at the right level
2. The drive shaft is in the correct place.

Is this the end for the gearbox and time to try to find a new one ?

When was the transmission oil last changed and who did it? If recent then they could have done a pressure clean which is an absolute no-no on these transmissions as it loosens the build up of oil lacquer which clogs the solenoid valves.

Does your warning system give you any warning lights at all?

The PnP switch may have failed but in this case not sure.

I would see if you can get someone to see if there are any transmission or other codes showing to see if that can give you a clue.

Hopefully not a transmission.

Neil.

I have a massive long thread in the forum regarding a solinoid shift problem :) :) :

But to answer the questions so you dont have to read it all...

I did the flush and it was about a year ago and maybe 1500km.
I have a brand new original valve body
No varnings in the car and no codes in Vida
PNP should be OK since I can se the gear selection in the display

The symptoms you're having sound a lot like a fully clogged filter. Do you a hear whine from the engine compartment that follows engine rpm and most noticeable when cold?

Regarding your question in another post about transmission replacement compatibility...

What I found to be different about these transmission (automatics) for the different models and model years are final drive ratio, FWD/AWD config and wiring harness connectors. In general and to get the same final drive ratio I think you'll need to find a transmission from the same model and AWD in your case and with the same engine, 2.5L in your case. You'll also need to find a transmission up to 2004 model year because of the changes to the wiring harness connectors or you could swap the older trans wiring harness into a newer model transmission depending on the valve body revision.
I purchased a transmission from a 2004 S60 T5 model for my 2001 V70 T5 (that was supposed to be compatible) and it had a different final drive ratio and this is why I say you'll probably need to stay with the same model and engine size. The difference in the final drive ratio was 2.27 for the S60 transmission vs. 2.44 for the V70, it was one tooth difference in the ring and pinion gears. I don't know if the difference in final drive ratios would have caused gear ratio errors if I had used the S60 transmission but I didn't take the chance. The S60 transmission was also a 51SN version vs a 50SN in the V70 and there are some internal design differences but it looks like the internal gear ratios are very nearly identical (except for final drive) but I can't say with 100% certainty they're both compatible.
You'll definitely need to match the AWD configuration although I've read of people swapping the case half and differential to make a FWD replacement transmission compatible.

Just started the car and no sound out of the ordinary.
Really frustrating that this happened right now.... just replaced all the bushings in front and new coil overs :)

Anyone have a link or the knowledge to say if these gearboxes are compatible.
Mine is 8675153 and the only one I can find is one from a "R" car with the number 8675179

From a couple of searches the difference between a 2.5T and a "R" gearbox is the gear selector in the cabin and maybe a different software?

Will post a couple of Youtube clips later today so you can se better what's happening.

From a cold start the car works just like normal, but after aprox, 5 min the car looses D and R
Turning the engine off for just 30 seconds will make the car drivable again for maybe 1 minute ...:)

When the car works like normal you can feel and hear the gears engaging, but when it's not working there is no reaction at all.
Just changes the letters D, N and R inte display.

Could this be a solenoid sticking when getting warm ? My controlsystem is "brand new" replaced is not even a year ago
