Do I need new shocks?

Post by justanotherhumanoid »

So I saw this while doing other maintenance. Everything feels great while driving, ride is smooth, etc. so no issues really, but visually these look like they could be in better shape. What say you all? Do I need to replace these, and if so, what should I do? All the related suspension components are original (2006 S60 2.5T AWD, ~100k miles).

Should I just replace the shocks, or the springs as well? Replace with stock/OEM? Replace with aftermarket? If aftermarket, what would you suggest? I don't think I would do coilovers as this isn't a track car, just a daily driver with some upgrades (R brakes, 16T, hilton stage 3 tune, etc). What are the components I should replace that I'm not thinking about - strut mounts? Bump stops? I don't know much about the suspensions on these cars.

Generally I prefer to do my own maintenance but I find compressing springs terrifying and would probably go with a reputable local volvo shop if the fix/upgrade requires that. I have been told not to use the quick struts for longevity concerns related to whoever manufactures those things. I'd love to do a minor performance/quality upgrade while keeping the ride fairly comfortable, if an option like that exists.

I submit pics for ya'll's consideration:

Compressing strings is fine; you just have to be REALLY slow.

A definitive way to figure it out is to see and ask yourself if you can feel every bump in the road, and if it's so loud that you can even feel it in your foot. But the only real way to find out is to disassemble the whole unit and push down on the strut and see how fast it comes back up, but that's not really worth it because you'd need to deal with getting install tool etc.

Mine is an 06 as well and looks almost exactly the same before I changed it. I think the whole unit is worn out, so I'd buy all of the parts and change it all (springs can last until it breaks), or just get the whole thing assembled from IPD it would be a super easy install. Because for example, it looks like your strut mounts are rusted to hell from the second pic. And I also bet the rubber mount is also cracked in where it vulcanizes to a metal ring
