Someone please help!!! So I originally lost my key to the car and had to get a new one when I finally picked it up the batterie was gonna need replaced. Later that day I almost missed the red light so I pressed the brakes and skid. My car wasnt cranking the next day. I ended up losing the key again!!! And my car gets towed so now I call a local guy he goes and makes a other key I get the car out of town and the key guy charges the batterie up when I get home the car dyes so I replace the batterie and now the car won't crank and I get a start prevented cosem I call the key guy and he wants to charge me again to reprogram the key. Mt guy friend says it can't be the key it's the starter so I replace the starter nope I tell him it's the immobilizer he has a friend come by to bypass the immobilizer he does something under the engine I think manually starts it by doing something in the engine tells me it's the relays I go get new relay's nope that's not it. Now there is engine performance reduced message. I need help I'm a 30 year old female and this covid has affected my income I can't afford to take it to a shop I've already put so much into it I can't afford another car

Whoever made you a new key needs to give you a refund, not request more money out of you. Only VOLVO dealers (and likely a very small number, like close to 0, specialized shops) can actually truly duplicate a VOLVO key. Any educated locksmith will tell you the only place to go is the dealership. Call another locksmith in town and ask them if they can duplicate VOLVO vehicle keys. You will get the answer "NO".

With that said, we need to clear a few things up about how the key works in this car. The key consists of the physical key itself, of which can be duplicated using any laser-cutting machine used by many key shops, and the transponder chip. BOTH of these are unique to your vehicle and required for it to start. The key is EASY to replace (still need the specialized laser cutting machine), but the transponder chip is IMPOSSIBLE to duplicate without being a dealer. I have heard of some people physically removing this transponder chip (looks like a little glass fuse, see below) and taping it to the steering wheel so that if a key is lost they will not run into this issue. See the last image of this blog post for a picture of the transponder chip, which is made of glass and easy to break : https://andrewpeng.net/cars/2006-volvo- ... key-repair

The antenna ring INSIDE of the key cylinder where you insert the key, reads this transponder "wirelessly", and allows the car to start. Basically the transponder says "Hey, I'm the key uniquely authorized to start this car!" and then antenna reads that signal and says "OK! Go ahead and Crank!" to the engine.

The fact that someone came by and "bypassed" the immobilizer concerns me. I wonder if they could have broken something. Any research you do on the forums regarding an immobilizer issue usually ends in the forum referencing that person to the dealer (Guys- can you imagine JRL seeing this thread?) That's because the immobilizer issue can actually be evident of a huge amount of different issues with the car, ranging from the CEM (electronic module), to some other sort of interference on the vehicle's communication bus. The takeaway here is that you need someone qualified to work on this highly sophisticated section of the vehicle, not some hack trying to bypass a communication bus issue. Hopefully someone on this forum can chime in and maybe someone near you has VIDA or can recommend a great mechanic.

Please note with all the above said, I have never actually worked on an immobilizer issue, but I have replaced the switchblade in my key and transferred over the transponder chip and I was curious how it worked so I did a lot of reading. I can almost guarantee that if I had an immobilizer issue I would schedule an appointment at a stealership, begrudgingly.

Also, when you're all done, buy one of these : https://www.amazon.ca/Lucky-Line-Produc ... B005L786EY .. a great stocking stuffer for the "Forgetful" one on your X-mas list

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

For some crazy reason i tried to "bypass" the immobiliser by removing the chip and placing it near the antenna ring. It is very difficult to do because it needs to be placed in just the right location to work, i was getting the "start prevented, try again" message. In the end i just got a new antenna.

I dont think there is a way to "bypass" it any other way...i would get the person to un-do what they did and then buy an antenna ring or get the person that did the key to do it properly.

Are you talking about the car battery dying is likely your alternator?
