Resurrecting Moby: Overheat > Cooling System Service > Oil Change > Engine Knock

Post by Swederweather »

Moby, 2004 XC70 @260k

1. Vehicle Overheats, dumps coolant and Oil
2. Vehicle will not hold coolant, will hold oil
3. Replace Water pump, idler pulley, tensioner, timing belt and thermostat housing
4. Idle car to temp, check for leaks. Nothing new or major.
5. Change oil. Definitely sparkly
6. New oil, 5w-30 full synthetic with lucas additive (not every but most oil changes)
7. Test drive, 10 miles no issues, then knocking starts.
8. Check timing, still where it was when I found it.
9. Blue driver Data : Code P0328, knock sensor bank 1, which as I understand it is a sensor code not a mechanical code, eg sensor is bad or picking up something it shouldn't, however engine IS knocking.
10. Failed glove test, puffs exhaust from open dipstick tube.
11. ?

I'm eyeing the pickup seals in oil pan from my YT sleuthing, what else should I be looking at? Seems like the consensus on this site is that this code is rarely, if ever, the knock sensor.

Definitely need to replace PCV, oil leaks @ turbo, PS leaks at steering wheel linkage and there's oil pools on top of the head where the coils are.

Yes I know this is a shit show, but I've never loved a car like this one and my funds come in the $3-400 a month range so purchasing a new car is highly unfavorable.

I've attached screenshots from the reader, what is this on the "Mode 6" screen? I've read about lean fuel mixture causing misfire, but these line items I can't click into or even read the full title.

My concern would be the sparkly oil, big end bearings?
Piston slap ?
Maybe a compression test to see if its worth fixing.
or have a mechanic diagnose it.

If you have sparklies then something has gone wrong. If you are getting a rod knock then the mains are probably toast.

Probably cheapest route is a used engine.

Upload a short video of starting and running. I’ve learned descriptions of engine noises are not reliable for troubleshooting
