2004 V70 NA, timing belt broken

Post by Faust »

Long story. Several years ago, I blew the timing belt on my '04 V70. Had it towed home, put it under the barn and transferred the plate to another Volvo. The short is I don't remember a lot about behavior when I broke the belt. I don't think I heard a lot of noise. I still have the car and like it's looks. Are there any tests I can perform to determine the extent of injury without putting in a new timing belt? Valve repair I might do, a busto piston puts a different light on things.

I have a spare old timing belt just for that purpose. You could set it up and turn the engine over to listen for broken stuff. It’s rare to break pistons, just bent valves.

Either way, head comes off to rework, so I think that’s next step

Pm me your address if you want me to send you that belt, after we confirm fitment.

It’s off my 1999 T5, pretty sure it fits a P2

If you can get your hands on a bore scope you can probe the spark plug holes and look for ding marks in the tops of the pistons.

The bore scope. I have one, should have thought of that.

You almost always have dings from the valves hitting. I usually grind them down not to create any hot spots.

Take a look at my T5 rebuild thread to see pictures of top of clean pistons. I’ve seen dings and semi circular marks that are standard, but my T5 didn’t have them
