2007 S60 2.5T 115K Front Coil Spring question...

Post by cn90 »

I have a question for the suspension gurus or anyone...

2007 S60 2.5T 115K is ready for suspension rebuild. I have done this susp rebuild in 1998 S70, 2004 V70, 2005 XC90...

This is my plan:
- Bilstein B4 Struts (probably better than Sachs)
- New Spring Seats
- New Spring Mounts

- The Coil Springs themselves: can I re-use them? I don't see report of these broken before 200K?
Please advise.

Absolutely. Although I have broken front and rear coil springs well before 200k, a few times. Salt exposure, no doubt, has influence on this. If the springs aren’t super rusty & pitted (and ride height hasn’t sagged noticeably/too much), I wouldn’t hesitate to reuse them.

Thanks Pete,

Only very minor minor surface rust. Nothing big.
I guess I can re-use them.
Then plan to replace them at 180K-200K.

I had a coil spring break on my 2004 XC70 at about 100K, lots of reports of similar incidents at VolvoXC.com. They are pretty cheap to replace. I replaced the springs, the spring seats and the sway bar end links. If I had to do it again, I would use the Sachs quick struts, but they were out of stock everywhere at the time. For $250 a side, I wouldn't have to touch anything for 75-100K mi...

Your equipment has aged to it being stressed and unsafe -- criteria is age, mileage, salted roads, and extreme weather NOT just mileage. Replace Spring!

I thought the broken spring issue is mostly with AWD models (XC70) and not so much with FWD (S60, V70)???

If you're changing out the struts, I would suggest definitely getting seats and mounts, Volvo brand only. The original springs will be fine provided they are not rusted and your OEM springs would be the first choice for a replacement brand if you do have to replace them. Spring steel doesn't wear out or sag unless it becomes altered chemically "rust", or impacted or struck. Just check the painted coating on the springs before you reinstall them. At 115K miles I find it hard to imagine that the strut themselves are worn out if they're OEM, these struts last a really long time!

I've never had a spring break on any FWD (or any, actually) Volvo and breaks are uncommon even on the forums where people get fooled into thinking the problems they read about represent a random sample. 115k is nothing, those springs are fine and will almost surely outlast whatever struts and hardware you install onto them. New spring seats and strut mounts of course, if you decide you want to get new struts.

On the contrary consider yourself lucky, the Sachs quick-struts can be junky.
