coolant leak??

Post by ylwgto »

Hi,

Looks like I have a slow coolant leak on the passenger side of my engine from one of the coolant hoses. I do not detect actual wet coolant, but there is a trail of coolant corrosion on the block and twice I have had to fill my expansion tank a bit due to the low coolant dash warning message.

In the attached pic, can anyone tell me what this part is, if there is a part number to replace it and the difficulty of replacing it?

Thanks!

If that's the block to coolant reservoir hose, it's PN 30792244. No idea how difficult to replace.

Definitely not the block to reservoir hose. It is lower on the engine below the head, and seems to be a block-to-head coolant hose, but not sure. it is half hard plastic and half hose. I cannot for the life of me tell how the hard end of the plastic is mounted into the block.

I think it is the engine oil cooler hose:

Anyone have experience replacing this? I think I'm weeping coolant from the block end (where the hard plastic connects to the block).

I see it now. VIDA suggests the intake manifold comes off. The 1 and 2 in the diagram are noting M6 and M7 screws (10Nm, 17Nm)

Don't remove the heat exchanger just the hose.

There is a Torx screw that holds the plastic part to the block (from memory its a T25 or T27)

If you want to use the Land Rover part you can

Here is the link for when I replaced this part on my LR2 3.2 (with the Volvo engine)

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic32245.html

LR001442 - Coolant Hose for heat exchanger

LR000491 - Bolt for Heat exchanger hose

LR001505 - O-Ring for heat exchanger hose

The Volvo hose is suppose to come with the O-ring but I bought this same part for my S80 and it didn't come in the package so I had to get the O-ring from Land Rover. (I got the parts in a Volvo box because I was already ordering some Volvo parts and it was easier to add this to the order. I replaced this part on both of my 3.2s and both were broken but they were not leaking)

The Volvo part number shown above is correct.

You should change your thermostat while you are in there (it is likely broken)

Note: the small hose can be changed without removing the intake manifold.

This is where the coolant hose goes

Good luck

Also, don't forget to lube the o-ring with coolant, or silicone-based lube or grease (very thin). Silicone is rubber safe.

If you install the o-ring/hose dry into the block, it could damage the o-ring. I was able to change this hose without removing the intake manifold. There is room in the XC90.

This is wrong and the wrong part when copying and pasting from VIDA.

See what Paul posted since he's done it in the real world. I've done the coolant hose too and there is no need to remove the intake manifold nor the oil cooler.

Swedespeed's not a big enough pond for you, now you feel bold enough to cross over to MVS and troll me here?

One might think that you have something more valuable in your life than proactively "correcting" members and pursuing your narrative.

Hi Greg,

No need for those words on MVS. Removing the oil cooler and the intake manifold are bigger jobs that require a lot more work and more parts. Even worse when it is not required. Paul posted great information about the hose change and his real-world experience, including the o-ring information. I too have real-world experience in changing this part and after Paul's information, I only added that the o-ring should be lubed so it reduces the risk of getting damaged upon installation.

I hope you appreciate all MVS members' real-world experiences and ensuring the right information is shared.
