Anti theft alarm goes off for no reason.

Post by 02V70 »

When the car is locked, after around an hour, all the blinkers start flashing, and it makes a siren noise. So far this happens every time. The siren is not that loud and would be similar volume to an iPhone at full volume. How would I fix this?

Don't you hate that stuff? I'm sure others here will have the clues to solve it.

The other day our Audi wagon out on the street started to beep beep beep. Oh no, now what, I thought.
At the very same time, I thought my wife had come home mad and shoved the front door against the wall BAM! I trotted out there and the patio door slammed shut WHAM! No wife. The house was full of dry leaves. A really big gust had come up and had blown cars and doors and kids all over the place! Nothing wrong with the car.

Your alarm siren PCB is most likely corroded and giving false alarms. You have 3 options:

1) remove the fuse for the siren (your sunroof won't work if you have one)
2) replace the module (if buying used, take a hacksaw and open it to make sure it hasn't suffered the same fate as yours)
3) go to a dealer and get the software package installed that will remove the siren functionality from the car

I chose option #1 because I don't have a sunroof and after cutting open 5 from a scrap yard none of them were good.

About 500 posts on this same issue across all the various boards. Has anyone linked you to Howard's Volvo Maintenace yet? It's really worth the read, should answer many of the common issues for you. https://howardsvolvos.webs.com/

Crap, I'm starting to make posts like sound like JRL's ... I think I have to take a break for a little bit

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

the nicad battery in the alarm module has started leaking, you might be able to save it if you do it now, remove and open the module.
rinse with baking soda to neutralize the acid. fix any burned lands and traces.
Install new nicad battery.
or buy a new module for $250.

The car does not know yet that you have to come out and help the theft to start the engine in order to take it away from you. For that reason alone I never lock my car, and even keep the valet key in the fuse box under the hood. Think how a thief thinks: old, unlocked Volvo? God, no... Not again!

Just in case, the car has a couple of old snapped hood cables lingering under the bumper, so I can unlock both locks and open the hood when the main hood cable snaps once again. Also the immobilizer antenna is not really attached to anything: there's another antenna hidden under the dash, with the real and the only one key left permanently glued to it. When in need, I can use my pocket knife to turn the ignition switch and start the car.

I probably need to leave a sticky note somewhere about that grinding noise: is not the transmission (rebuilt last year), not the engine (rebuilt in 2020), not the bevel gear (rebuilt in 2019), not the steering rack (factory-rebuilt in 2018), not the suspension (fully rebuilt in 2018), not CV axles nor driveshaft (bought new or factory rebuilt in recent years), so god knows what the hell is that. The car drove just fine at least 60k miles since the noise first came up, with the exception of need/urge to replace/rebuild everything listed above. Oh, also about that light touch of foul stench: it's not A/C. The whole HVAC system was replaced/cleaned/deodorized less than 2 years ago. That's also not carpets: they were either replaced with factory new ones or cleaned with Tornador uncountable times. You see the passenger carpet looks somewhat baldish? That's Tornador! No dirt whatsoever, not a grain of sand! I suspect the stench comes from a disintegrating headliner glue.

Mobil 1 0w40 every 5k works best. Transmission is "new", it works best with the original ATF, but Toyota T-IV + Lubegard HFM is OK. Keep it partially flushed like every 20-30k. Fuel pump duty cycle keeps around 50%, the old, original pump may still have 2 or 3 years of life. Leave your $80 in the mail box if taken overnight. Subscribe to MVS. Good luck!

Are there any relays, fuses, or wire connections that I should check? The previous mechanic broke a lot of things by not plugging stuff in all the way, losing relays, and putting fuses in the wrong place.

I removed the fuse, and the sunroof still works fine.
