V70 no start

Post by Dkehrley »

'99 v70 xc. No rpm during crank. Code p 0343. Just replaced head gasket after freshening head as originally she just stalled. Compression is 50 lbs less unless I remove the main vacume line then it does make an attempt, It seems that the motor is not receiving air but all connections are secure. I'm at a loss, how do I test the throttle (fly by wire)?

Whenever I hear of P80 non-start, regardless of the error code, I think "check fuel pump relay". Always.

As Sonic says check the obvious first and the relay is that. You should hear the pump whine slightly when you first turn the ignition to II.

Setting the timing is a challenge on these engines with VVT. Are you sure the timing is 100% correct and not a turn of the crank out?

What is the main vacuum line? Line to where?

Rpm needle is not suppose to move when engine is cranking....so i'm not sure what you meant when you said " no rpm during crank".

Sorry gang I had to walk away as the obd2 connection stopped activating my scanner. That's first thing to diagnose tomorrow
The timing mark's are dead on I removed the vvt hub doing the timing (quite a task for my old school brain but thanks to this forum I think I got it right, new locking tool and all)
Compression on all cylinders
Goes up 40lbs if I allow a vacume leak on the intake manifold by pulling the vacume hose to the break booster.
I have fuel pressure on the rail (50lbs) and can hear the pump cycle. Volume seems to be fine while cranking.
New cam and crank sensors
My no rpms symptom comes from the 'live data' tab on the obd2 scanner during cranking

I'm back on it again tomorrow. It's become a mater of pride and this will not get me

P0343 is a bad signal from the crank position sensor if I read the code correctly.
