Try with disconnecting the Maf sensor first.
If it idles better with Maf disconnected,you found the culprit.

Dtc codes must be read to see what exactly the problem is.

1997 & 1998 s,v,c or xc70 instrument clusters are not interchangeable with pre '96 850. It will work ONLY on '96 & '97 850 which originally had VDO clusters. Also...'99 & '00 s,v,c or xc70 instrument cluster will not work in any 850 nor pre '99 70 series cars because of CAN protocol intr...

There is a warning lamp on instrument cluster about exhaust temperature on 850 and 70 series p80 cars but it's not used...it's a spare bulb socket for most markets.
I think that i read somewhere that it's used on cars for Japanese market only.

Found it:

Cam sensor & distributor plate can go in two ways...one way is a no start.
Re-position them.

Vacuum line from flame trap on early 850 doesn't go to pass.side of intake manifold.
It goes to the vacuum tree.

First...you need to remove the alternator and bench test it at some good car electrician. Then you will know for sure what is wrong with it. Maybe the battery have short cell inside. Before you remove it...check alternator output when engine is running. Healthy charging system must have 14-14.2v at ...

Never seen or heard that ever happened...untill now.
Trip computer can be replaced so you can keep the old cluster.

To avoid potential surprises...find the one from '96 or '97...since i don't know for sure if those from earlier cars are interchangable(plug & play).

I wouldn't worry about it.
If it's my car...i wouldn't change it at 1k miles.
