I think my '97 855 GLT also had a hard white hose like this, with a crumbly rubber elbow, and it was part of the SAS system, connected to the solenoid valve on top of the radiator as abscate mentions above. I had that concern too -- flexible thick wall silicone tubing worked. You can get a tight seal on the narrow end and still be able to stretch the tube over the larger fitting on the other side.

I used some 3.5mm or 4mm silicone hose from Verocious motorsports.

If you haven't already, it might be a helpful to measure the voltage on the primary (low voltage) side of the coil to see if it's good. I would expect it to be > 12.6V with the car running. Also, it would be a good idea to check the engine grounds and battery ground cables are good, with low voltage...

I used silicone lines to replace the vacuum hoses on my 850 about 10 years ago and they have been working well with no degradation so far.

Today I 'repaired' the busted rubber radiator mount on the driver's side on my 850 by using a fender washer under the rubber to give it more support. The mount was split by hitting the underneath side of the car on the surface of a steep driveway.
