It's trying to burn, but some fuel molecules don't burn at all (so you get HC), and some only burn part way (to CO, not all the way to CO2). The repair was finished after finding fuel safe silicon fuel hose to use as the pipe joiner.. This has worked perfectly and the car sails through mot inspection... I used cv boot clips to secure the pipe in place and it looks intentional and factory standard.. No leaks and it is still holding strong..
