I couldn't get any tool to go down into the recessed hole to grip the ring, the local auto stores had nothing for me, and I was breaking off teeth from the ring using the hammer and wood block method, so I figured out a way to get it loose using just regular tools we all probably have. I popped in a new mehle fuel filter in about ten minutes. Started right up, seems to drive well. I’ll report back if anything changes in the next few days.

But it looks like a $25 fix.
