Re: Looking at 98 V70 GLT turbo wagon....
Is it being sold by a fastidious owner with a thick folder of maintenance receipts, or a regular person who just changes the oil and calls it good enough? Plan on it needing a timing belt & water pump, PCV service, heater core, and every single rubber hose on the car replaced (most critically th...

Re: Did some hack drill out my intercooler weep hole?
Well, Home Depot came through with a fix. Off-idle stumble is now gone and long-term fuel trims are hovering around -6% after an hour of driving. Feel like kind of an idiot for not noticing this sooner.

Re: 1998 V70 - possible ECC control unit bad?
You don't need to take it apart to check the potentiometer. I’m not talking about the blend motor, I’m talking about the dashboard! The entire dash has been reassembled already and with the current temps in Wisconsin I don’t intend to take it all apart again until spring. I can’t imagine a way I co...

850 sedan HT-259 rear deck speaker adapters (CAD file enclosed)
As many of you likely know, Volvo 850 sedans have "HT-259" rear deck speakers that are approximately 6" by 9", but in a way that is completely incompatible with standard "6x9" speakers (which are too large). They are also 8 ohm impedance which means you can't really use...

Re: Parts brands - OE Volvo, trusted aftermarket, and bad
I recently replaced the fuel pump in my 850R. Because I was in a rush and working in a not-ideal location (original unit failed with my car parked on the street in front of my apartment!) I wanted a complete assembly with the housing and everything. The OE Volvo unit was quite expensive and subject ...

Another 850 speaker upgrade - dash tweeters
Much like the rear deck speakers in my 850, the dash tweeters in my car were also totally shot, and I didn't want to waste my money on more crappy junkyard replacements. Luckily, unlike the rear deck speakers, there was a precedent for replacing the dash tweeters that got me started: https://www.swe...

Re: 850 sedan HT-259 rear deck speaker adapters (CAD file enclosed)
After a few days of listening to these I've realized that I should have included a low-pass filter when putting these together. The speakers do an admirable job of full-range reproduction but given the way the 850's audio system is set up (rear door speakers are already 2-way and delivering plenty o...

Re: Best tool to open up fog light holes on 1996 850 bumper/valance, and any tips?
Just to close the loop on this, I ended up doing the job with a simple utility knife. The key is to use high quality blades and make many small cuts around the perimeter, going deeper and deeper each time. When you’re done, just hit the perimeter with some sandpaper to smooth out the cuts. It probab...

Re: Best tool to open up fog light holes on 1996 850 bumper/valance, and any tips?
Shoot, I missed this. I did this about two years ago. It was a pain. I put blue painters tape over the exterior of the corners, and from the inside I used a cordless soldering iron and poked through the ring outlines from along the inner of the two, I believe. I then finished it with a cheap cordle...
