In hopes that this thread might help someone else with a similar problem. It turned out to be the fuel pump. My suspicion is that the pump choked when getting to hot. After replacing the pump, the car ran as normal.

Keep up the maintenance on your current vehicles and make them last.

Well, turns out it was not a bad axle but a bad wheel bearing. On the rear bearings, the ABS sensor ring is integral with the rear of the bearing. This had failed and was separated from the bearing. Hence the nasty noises.
New wheel bearing and all is good.
