I always replace all the factory clamps with Stainless Steel double bolt band clamps made from recycled Chernobyl plant fuel rods. They never rust and are easy to see in the dark. My source now insists on payment in Rubles.
By the way, the Ruble is now worth 2 USA cents.

Caught on trip back from CA, over Utah\Az corner?

I vote with the "it's fine, just use it" guy. Why? It is not very deep. You are not racing. It has a radius at the bottom of the groove so is less likely to start a stress crack. The other 'repairs' may make the problem worse.
