I replaced my front (FWD) axles pre-emptively at 90K with a DSS right and a Cardone left. Put about 20k on them and all is well.

The older one may fit in the gearbox, but the outer carrier bearing won't fit in the clamp.

Here's the page from VIDA that lists the torques for the axle group, I didn't find the torque for the bearing cap 2 screws that contain the bearing. I had a similar experience trying to get it back in past the circlip. What made it happen was just some wheel bearing grease massaged into the ring and land, and a light coating on the splines.. No gobs of excess required.
