I appreciate your help - I read the links you suggest prior to my posting.

Maybe you could help interpret the pictures, but from them I still cannot tell which way the replacement gear is facing. Should your eyes be better than mine, maybe you can tell.

It has been too long since I started this project, and I cannot remember the gear orientation for the infamous 850 odometer gear (1994 NA 855, 225,500 mi).:oops:

The normal Seafoam manifold treatment would not reach the lifters.

Seafoam actually suggests you pour some into the crankcase for that. I have been reluctant to do so, but maybe if it is fairly soon to the next oil change - still not real comfy putting it in the crankcase.

Prior to disassembly, try to check if it is better turning in one direction (at higher speeds) and worse in the other direction.
