Have you checked the fluid level in the transmission? It sounds like if may be low on fluid.

You would probably be better off replacing the ECM and having it reprogramed. Doesn't always have to be a dealer. There may be an independent repair facility in your area that specializes in Volvos and has the ability to download factory software.

Where did it drop out of? It looks like a retaining clip that locks into something that attaches to something else. Maybe a trim panel or a cover.

You may have a situation where the compressor isn't cycling. If it stays engaged the evaporator will freeze up and not allow air to past through. There is a cycling switch and a relay that controls the compressor. Usually the relay will stick and keep the compressor engaged all of the time.
