I think the S40 and C30 have the same heater boxes. If so I believe the problem is the drain hose from the heater box to under the center of the car. On the C30 the hose is located behind the carpet in the passengers side. It is a very small flexible hose about 5 inches long

My 2000 S70 GLT SE had the same noise on bumps . It was the lower A frame . Lift the front end and check for play in the wheel.

1st photo is tie rod 2nd and 3rd appear to be drive shaft boot that is seperated. The noise might be the lower ball joint. To check lift the wheel off the ground and you should be able to check for excess play

The button on the center consul is slightly depressed . With a sharp probe or knife work the button to its up position maybe 1/16" by pointing the sharp item in the side of the button and then push down on the other end of the tool. move to the opposite side and repeat.

MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE YOUR OIL. Use a Volvo oil filter or Mann. I had a Midas shop change the oil . The filter they used collapsed and starved the turbo of oil. $900 later a rebuilt turbo.
