Re: Alternator Pulley Fell Off

Agree with new alternator. Pulley: life is about 140K-160K as you have learned. Alternator lifespan is about 180K-200K (bearings, brushes etc.), the VR can fail any time between 100K-200K. So a brand-new alternator is the way to go, less future headache. I guess you can return the pulley (FCPEURO 30...

Yeah, A good device is the trickle charger, about $10 at Harbor Freight. If you have the coupon, it can go down to $5. Inside the garage is easy, just plug it in. Outdoor is a bit more challenging, make a habit of charging it let's say for the whole Saturday when you are at home, then unplug it. ---...

Let's say you now drive only 2K-2.5K a year. Then keep the oil for 2 yrs/5K , many ppl do that (keeping the oil for 2 yrs)...

Want the easy way out?
Try Trico 16" refill, the refill, not the whole blade.
It takes less than 60 sec to replace the refill.

PS: Or try Trico 47-600 Refills and cut it to factory length.

An old trick is to remove the bottom plate before you get stranded.

I did this yrs ago, and it has been trouble-free since....

I agree with replacing it. It is just electronic component(s) failure more than sand getting in. When buying used on ebay, I'd recommend searching for a PEM unit with Velcro (check ebay photos) bc Velcro is used for PEM units that are located inside the car (under rear seat or trunk). Does anyone here know how to look for the mfg date on the PEM?
Just in case, one wants to know if the PEM has been replaced already by the P.O.

I looked at some PEMs for sale on ebay and there are a whole bunch of numbers, which I don't think represent mfg date.

Google "volvo stripped water pump threads" and you will see a few people with same issues.

Once you fix it and done, do NOT install the timing belt etc.
Pressurize the cooling system for any leak first!
This way you can correct it as necessary.

Since this is a potential problem, I suggest that you use ONLY Aisin + Volvo green gasket and nothing else.
You want to use what is known to be the best, this way, if it leaks later, you know it is not the WP or the gasket.

Very often the side latch sits a bit too high.
All you have to do is to mark the existing position with Sharpie.
Then loosen the 10-mm bolts to lower the latch a bit.
It is trial/error.

The metal gasket is between the LOWER housing + engine block. No need to replace it.
In the P80 cars (850, S70 etc.), this metal gasket lasts the life of the car.

The paper gasket is between the LOWER and UPPER housings.

Actually, you should look at local junk yard and see if you can find a gas pedal from a newer car with less mileage.

Is the PN for gas pedal 30683516?

I wonder if one can swap another ETM from another car (same year, same model).
If this is true, then try to find a similar car (non-turbo) and swap.
If this solves the problem, then you know the answer.

I am not a part-swapper, but sometimes a swap diagnoses things very quikcly.

Another blower is your dryer machine at home. It usually runs on bushing, not ball bearings. If it squeals, just add a tiny bit of oil (1-2 drops) and a tiny bit if grease at the interface btw the shaft and the bushing. It will run "forever"...

The washing machine runs on ball bearings.

Is the plastic top of the sender unit cracked?
If so, you may need an entirely new sender unit: Volvo ($110) vs aftermarket ($35).

The O-ring PN is 9183708. Genuine Volvo is certainly the best but it is $25. Aftermarket O-ring is about $8-$10, but it is a gamble. Maybe you can take your O-ring and go to local parts store, but I doubt they carry this odd size. This Video discussed all this stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...

Do you rely on the torque only?

Great story... My 1998 S70 GLT blew an exhaust valve at around 180K. I drove with 4 cylinders (unplugged the #3 injector connector). At 190K, it lost the Reverse on at Auto Trans. The chip came around 1999 or 2000.
So for 850 and 1998 S70 etc. the key w/o chip is about $6.
Just supply the Volvo dealer with VIN and your registration proof, they will make it and ship it to you (or you pick it up).

VVT O-ring, if bad, will cause INTERNAL leak, i.e., no activation of VVT.
I posted detail in the other forum.

Thanks all, Looks like I will order 2 Front Cam Seals and 2 Rear Cam seals. All Corteco brand. Will skip Crank seal for now. 2005 XC90 2.5T with 120K and leaking cam seal, do I leave crank seal alone?

Hi guys, Since the 2.5T engine is common to S60, S80, and XC90... My 2005 XC90 2.5T with 120K develops an oil leak at the right subframe area, very classic for cam seal leak. For each side, I always use 2 jack stands: - One 4-leg jack stand (the weakest point of this jack is always at the welding seam, search youtube for test on it using hydraulic press). - One screw jack stand, cranked up so it shares 50% of the load. And from the itemized listing, I can tell the repair would include a complete replacement of control arm and bolts. The XC90 control arm can be steel or aluminum, depending on the year (IIRC). The fore part has 2 horizontal bolts, the aft one vertical bolt. Your aft vertical bolt broke off, it was probably damaged/weakened by the curb hit, then on highway, it just broke off. I wrote a whole front end DIY, so you ...

Steering Rack, if leaking, usually leaks at 150K+ miles.
