Re: Hard Starting

Can you describe anything about how it behaves when you first turn the key?

Re: Volvo 940 not taking gas right away.

Examine the turbo, it sounds like extreme turbo lag, which these cars don't usually have much of. Check that intake hose connecting to the turbo, I wonder if it might be cracking open. As for your speedometer/odometer, that's likely the wires from the sending unit being worn and not making a good co...

Re: '89 740 Turbo Wagon SRS Light

The button on the On Board Diagnostic- it talks about it in the link I gave, but it may be more thorough to go read the top Sticky on this board's index, put there by Bill of Durham. The OBD is a black box in the engine compartment by the driver's side fender well, where you can pull codes from the ...

Re: '89 740 Turbo Wagon SRS Light

You've got to call up the code on the self diagnostic, read it two more times, and then hold it down a long time twice to clear it. Explained better here!

Re: 89 740 GL Turbo intermittent start issue

Excellent. Let us know if that did it when you put it back. I'm finally a big believer in squirting PB Blaster on bolts and letting it soak in before I try to remove parts that have been on forever.

It's a great feeling having a new or rebuilt starter, it'll last a long time!

Re: 89 740 GL Turbo intermittent start issue

That is the starter, and be careful how you bang on it, a rubber mallet would be better. Your dad wants you to dislodge build-up that's interfering with the starter motor. It could also be the alternator, maybe even just the battery. If the alternator isn't charging it, the battery will eventually d...

Re: 1990 volvo 740 GL wont start!

I wouldn't worry, that spray evaporates fast. Did it look clean inside? You'd see noticeable crust gunking things up if it were really dirty. His cleaning was likely fine. But of course, all comments by Bill overrule mine, he's the Volvo king.

Re: 1990 volvo 740 GL wont start!

Cool, thanks for the follow-up Jessica, glad to hear you're rolling. There are some great Volvo-specific garages around too you might want to look into at some point. That used part is probably totally clean, so it shouldn't need any fussing for a while! PM me if there's anything you don't feel like...

Re: 1990 volvo 740 GL wont start!

Hmm, my post vanished. Jessica, are you in Portland, Oregon? If so, which shop did you take the car to? I have lots of kid errands Sunday, but if you aren't too far away from me (I'm in the Hollywood area) I could bring you the wrench and carb cleaner you need to clean the IAC and get you started. I...
