I haven't done this myself, but I do remember other forum members describing doing just what you said......drawing the cover down with the bolts a little at a time.

Yes it will change as the temperature of the engine block changes. The aluminum engine block will "grow" or expand as it heats up.

I've tried clearing the coded with the ODBII tool and I haven't had any better luck bringing the car into readiness. I don't doubt what you're saying JRL, but neither method has worked well for me. I've tried the driving cycle as well and that doesn't do anything on my 98 either.

Sorry Ozark, but I have to point out that the crankshaft has to be rotated in the clockwise direction, looking at it from the right hand side of the car. Bad things will happen if he tries to rotate CCW.

The 4 bolts and the 30mm nut have to come off to remove the pulley. I just did the timing belt on my 98 S70 on Monday and I removed the pulley. I have air tools so removing the 30mm nut was no problem. The pulley comes right off with very little force. I used a small 2 jaw puller that was so small ...

The 30mm center nut does have to come off. If you're not going to remove the pulley, cut the old belt off and snake the new one back in. The new one will go in a lot easier than trying to take the old one out.

The timing mark on the block is not so much a mark as it is a bump in the casting itself. Here's a link with a pic that will help.
