98 s70 pcv system

I asked my mechanic to clear out the pcv system while he was fixing some other things and said it would cost $300-400!!1 I told him to forget about it and I'd worry about it some other time.

How much labor is required to clean it out myself?

That is true.
To replace a breather the intake manifold has to come off, a 4 hour job and usually worth every penny as if it's not replaced somewhere along the line and becomes all clogged up.
The oil has to go somewhere, like out the rear main seal and other nasty orifices' as you have just found out
90K would be a perfect time to do this.
Unless you're having a problem, the water pump does NOT have to be replaced, they're good for 2-3 times that mileage.
You are doing a rear main seal BECAUSE it is clogged, want to do another one????????
Replace the breather box at this time

As I said, about 3-4 hours.
MIJ should be able to put up a schematic later.
As I said, the intake has to be removed to get at the breather box. Do not. NOT do this, now is the time with the new RMS being installed

FCP sells all the parts in a "kit" to do this. Here's the link for a 98 turbo.

Do a search and you'll get all the info you need, but basically the intake manifold has to come off to access the parts and you need to clean out the passages on the heater block where the PCV lines plug into the intake piping.

sorry for the dumb follow up. I was at work at my mind was focused on something else. I'll take your advice and have the mechanic do the clean out.

Good idea!.
I mean you're spending a lot of money on a car that you're obviously keeping for a while and you like it.
This is important, almost as much as the rest of the items and besides, as long as you keep records and you keep up the rest of the car (paint and interior), you should get more on the other end (sale) when to DO decide to get a new(er) car

One last check in - is there anything else I should have the guy fix while he's in doing the PCV system. Right now something happened to the exhaust, sound and vibration coming from directly under the drivers seat. You could mistake the car for a fighter jet taking off.

Check ALL the motor mounts.
I have found when one (or more) mount is worn or actually broken, the engine tilts past its spec and it's noisier
