my s60 hit 105k miles.water pump failed and warped my head. Costs to repair over $1,000

The compression of air came from near the water pump and coolant resivour. Would a failed water pump result in an empty resivour? The mechanic said water was in the engine, he drained it out and the car started so he could move it. I'm dropping off the parts tomorrow

Can somebody tell me how these prices sound.. head resurface $200 gasket kit $200 water pump $50 timing belt kit $150 and labor costs $350... also any recommended sites to buy parts

If I knew "the drill" i wouldn't be seeking assistance.. This is my first car, I am a mechanically inclined intuitive college student so if its possible to perform the Pressure Test with standard tools that'd be awesome! Thanks guys

I checked under oil cap and oil dipstick and there are no signs of residue. Radiator coolant is completely empty after filling yesterday before driving home.
