Re: Spark plug issue

Are you sure you have the correct spark plugs? Could these be too long and the piston is actually hitting the spark plug?

I only use Volvo OEM spark plugs and have never had an issue with spark gap or electrode damage.

Re: Water pump keep or replace?

I believe the general consensus is replace the water pump with the 2nd timing belt change...not with the 1st timing belt change. Of course, you are quite a ways away from your 1st timing belt change. I've got a 2001 V70 T5, original owner with 157k miles. Still on the original water pump but 1st tim...

ETM software

Greetings, I asked in an earlier post but didn't get a definitive answer so I'll try again hoping someone can help. For a given engine code (B5234T3 in my case), is there any difference in the ETM software between a vehicle with a manual transmission (M56) versus an automatic transmission? Thank you.

2001 V70 T5 with OBDII port under dash left of steering wheel.

I thought OBDII was mandatory post 1994 for the US market. All of my cars newer than 1994 had one (all cars built for the US market).

Non US market may be different.

With the same PN, it should be plug n play. I've personally had success. I'm not sure if you also need to shut the driver door, and lock/unlock three times with the key fob. Also, if you are new to P2 Volvo's, you must absolutely use Pentosin CHF 11S power steering fluid (green can). Low fluid, dirty fluid, or another brand (other than Volvo which I believe is Pentosin) can cause a moan.

Glad you were able to pull the codes.

Both are emissions codes. I'd recommend you tighten or replace your gas cap, reset the codes and then see if they come back.

If you overfilled your tank recently, that also could throw an emissions code.

Good luck.

I worked for Bosch designing/manufacturing diesel injection systems and what you have done is loosen the "edge filter". Another indicator of high crankcase pressure is the oil dip stick may be pushed up (due to the pressure). Have you checked for this after running it at higher rpm's? If the dip stick is still seated, I'd think you are good, or the pressure isn't so high as to cause a problem.

I've never heard of a "PCV Glove Test" under load, only familiar with the glove test on the oil fill at idle. Are you seeing any new oil leaks on the engine?

If you are confident that you replaced the system correctly, I'd carry on as if it's repaired and only monitor for new leaks.

I believe you can also do this with the key in the driver's door lock. If that doesn't work, go to the cargo bay and check fuse #8 (for r...

Thanks. The earlier V70's actually had a manual release back there. I guess Volvo implemented a cost savings starting in 2001. Looks like you just added the manual release back. :D

I'll probably look at the current motor, and replace it with a junkyard part if it can't be repaired.

Thanks June for your response. I'm the original owner with the original Owner's Manual. No manual or emergency release on the 2001 V70 T5. Fuel filler door locking/unlocking is all tied to the central locking system, which works (other than the fuel door).

Fuel filler door won't unlock Topic is solved

Went to fill-up this morning and the fuel filler door wouldn't unlock. My T5 doesn't have the push button unlock on the dash like the XC70's. Just a hint from a 2001 V70 T5 manual transmission owner for the last 18 and 1/2 years...I've never gotten better than 25 mpg on any "highway" trip running 70-75 mph. If you want 30+ mpg, you will need to buy an NA or a different model.

Glad you got your timing straightened out.

Replace your battery. Double check combi belt condition and tension. If these don't fix it, then you see if the alternator is generating the proper voltage. Focus on the battery 1st. Don't forget to use the battery reset procedure or you'll have door lock and sunroof issues.

Glad to see that helped. If you are really dumping fuel into the oil, you can also check your dipstick for signs of fuel and the level might even be high. Since you haven't reconfirmed wet spark plugs, I'm betting a little overfueling due to the sensor. You'll certainly know when you change your oil.

The issue is, should the coolant be drained and replaced? Not who does it. I'm sorry. You asked who should do it (Jiffy Lube). I replied "no". I think you should flush the coolant if you have never done it. I also think you should stick with Volvo fluid. If you don't trust your local Volvo dealer, ...

Re: 2005 V70R second owner

Would you trust Jiffy Lube with the job? No. You really want the Volvo coolant designed for these engines. If you can't/won't do it yourself (this is a pretty much DIY forum), find a good Indie or possibly find a car cheaper to maintain than a V70R. Fun to drive but not cheap to maintain unless you...

I don't disagree. I think they had so many failures with the original circular version, that they needed to do something different. I personally don't like the square mount. Is the bushing actually supposed to be bonded to the housing? Yes, the bushing is bonded to the housing. When it is torn, there is too much movement and it doesn't meet it's design intent. You are getting the "thud" because there is too much movement of the engine when shifting gears. The bushing s...

Original MAF (mass air flow sensor)? Ever cleaned?

I'd google/read up on replacing your MAF and the symptoms of one going bad. If this is the issue, cleaning the sensor, or replacing with a junkyard one with the same PN would keep your expenses down.

Good luck.

So three ways to unlock...pull knob up (mechanical), turn key in locking cylinder (mechanical), or use keyfob (electrical). No dealer program...

I'll try to help. 1st, could you be more specific with the car, is it an NA, a 2.4T or a T5? This will help in confirming what color option she may have. 2nd, Go to the car and open the hood. So, electrically (key fob and door switch), the door locks and unlocks, but mechanically (with key), you have nothing. When you put the keys in the door and try to turn, do the keys turn? If so, it is possible the attaching rod/plastic grommet connecting to the locking mechanism became disconnected....

I just hammer them on with the impact. Then check 50 miles later. Major fail in my opinion. If you want to bend or warp your rims (esp. if they are aluminum), don't use an impact wrench. I'd never do this and warped rims is the main reason you hand torque them. To each his own, but I don't like buy...

Picked up (2) used hood struts from LQK junkyard for $13. Came off of a 2005 V70. Are "stronger" than my originals from 2001. Installed them and now there is no issue with holding the hood all the way up, or even holding it slightly closed, even with the cooler weather.

Re: Can anyone help with my color code? B980 =/= Oak? Topic is solved

No, you're wrong, stay out of this, you will only confuse him more. XC leather colors are different than standard V70 Colors and ESPECIALLY with 1s and 02s, these were/are different than the later cars. Sand is MUCH lighter than Oak, MUCH lighter! Sorry to try to help. My intention was not to confu...

Re: Can anyone help with my color code? B980 =/= Oak? Topic is solved

This looks similar to my 2001 V70 T5 interior. Based on the original build sheet (speced in Germany and shipped to the US), my color is Sand Leather "Sport", code AA51. I believe mine is a different code # because of the "Sport" (T5 leather package). So it looks to me like B980 is Sand (vs Sand Leat...

Re: Front rotors - What to do with those ones?

Never seen that pattern before. Based on the rust, easier to replace them then cut them.

Your choice of pads is good.

Good luck.

Re: 2002 V70 XC Air Conditioning Failed After Replacing Alternator

Maybe the air conditioning failure is a coincidence with your alternator replacement. Have you removed shims from your compressor yet? Being a 2002, it may be long overdue (dependent on usage over the last 15 years). There are multiple threads in this forum concerning the need to close the gap when ...

Re: Door does not unlock

Your call on new vs junk yard. FCPEuro has new door lock actuators for $180. I bought a used one for $20 at my local junkyard. Of course, no guarantees with used parts (except for credit exchange at my Pick-N-Pull.) S60 door lock actuators are the same PN as V70 door lock actuators (maybe even S80's...

Re: Door does not unlock

I had a similar issue with my "P2" car so I may be able to help. You will need to replace the door lock actuator to correct your issue. I believe there are "how to's" to help you do this...maybe even check YouTube for a video. I picked up a used actuator from a junkyard since new ones from Volvo wer...

Fluid shouldn't be brown, needs to be a clean green. A good flush is needed. Hope this is your solution.

Re: Best way to track down an oil leak?

Sounds like you have done a lot of troubleshooting already. Did you change the oil or was the last change by the previous owner? Could it be something as simple as the oil filter canister rubber gasket is missing or pinched or torn? I'd check this 1st to eliminate it as a potential leak path. Good l...

Re: alternator pulley Topic is solved

You may get lucky and be able to remove and install the pulley while the alternator is still on the engine. I tried but couldn't remove the pulley since it was seized on the shaft. I needed to remove the alternator to get leverage to do the pulley install properly. Hopefully, you will have more luck...

Re: alternator pulley Topic is solved

My recommendation would be to just replace the alternator pulley. I had a failure last September, and after all the research and determining the cost of an alternator replacement, I opted to just do the pulley. You can get the pulley from FCPEuro. For a 2001 V70 T5, it was $35.99 (PN 30667878) You w...

Re: POLL What's your favorite color? XC70 2001-2007

I'm bias. Was available in 2001 only on the T5, color # 447, Cypress Green. Certainly don't see too many this color. Not sure it was ever offered on the XC70.
