actually, not the big pan behind the structural cross member (and under the oil pan) but the smaller plastic shield in front of it... seems like if I could get this down, the lower hose would be right there.

jimmy, thanks for your reply, I'll try working from the top down to get at the lower hose... about how much spilled oil comes out of the radiator once the hose is disconnected? are we talking put a rag under it? or a container? thanks again.
