I own a 1994 2.0 20 valve 850 which the engine has expired on me,i have the chance of a good 2.5 lump from the same era,both are on manual boxes,my question being are there any real headaches in fitting the 2.5 motor into a 2.0 car,they obviously look the same etc.
Would it just be a case of ...

Do you know if the car has sat for awhile with old gas in it? If so, drain and put fresh gas in as well as changing the fuel filter (which you mention) as it is also suspect. where are you relieving the pressure on the unit? from the fuel rail?

Have you checked your fuel relays?

Did you try keeping the spark plugs on the engine block and firing it up to see if there is any spark?

Has the fuel filter been changed?
