I'd also double-check the belts. I tried getting away with a single belt once (my 90 takes two to the alternator) and had the same charging problem.

I had the governor on my 90 240 self-destruct when two screws backed out, and I had to replace it from a junkyard 240. It only took me about 15 minutes to pull off the tailshaft housing. Wobble extensions and an electric impact wrench were helpful, as was not really caring that much about supporting ...
