Yes I understand how it "should/would" come off. But I felt around for about ten minutes (thats a long time to feel around on one little part) and could not feel any flat spots anywere to fit a pipe wrench or any other wrench onto.

If you're going to replace it with a new one anyway, just use a pipe wrench. You don't need flat spots. They're designed to turn round things. I've used them for that in the past and you get lots of leverage.

Fork in the road: Outer goes there, Inner stays here

Outer tie rod questions and tips on 850, S70, V70, XC70, and V70 XC older than model year 2001 let's put in Outer Tie Rod Replacement Tutorial - 850, S70, V70, XC70. Inner tie rod questions and tips we'll use this topic. It's not as though either inner or outer is that big of a job or terribly different from each other, but since we have two topics, might as well keep each focused. Thanks!

Just some info from my experience:
Tried to replace the inner tie rod today, but I utterly failed. Couldn't get the old one off - I tried a wrench (and hammering ist) and also a pipe wrench... no chance (not enough space and also the metal just strips off). :x
I checked online and there are special tools for this to use with an impact wrench... like this

At least I couldn't do it... so my advice - either get the tool or have the shop do it if you are not sure you can get it open.

At least I didn't ruin it.

Is the method in the video for inner tie rod applicable to 1997 850 with TRW rack?

I don't know if my 850 has a TRW, but the problem was the same. I too used a pipe wrench. The tool in that video looks like a lot of work to save a little work.

I am trying to source the boots in order to do this repair. I need the SMI boots (Volvo P/N 9191409). It appears that the only name-brand aftermarket for these is "KARLYN." Has anyone ever tried the KARLYN brand boots? Are they any good?

I'm seeing a 2 pack of KARLYN for about $30 on eBay vs $46 each for Genuine Volvo at TASCA.
