Anyone have any personal experiences to share?
I've been using Genuine filters for the past 60K but my last oil change a Mobil 1 was used as it was on hand and I didn't realize I didn't have a Genuine one.
I am now hearing decent chatter when I first start the car in the mornings after it sits at least 1 full night. I'm thinking it's the filter as this is new behavior.
I have done my oil pan o rings recently and do not have any other funny symptoms....
Thanks for your input.

I used a Mobil 1 filter (cartridge style) with no problems. They have pretty good reviews around the web, but it's possible it may not be 100% right for your application.

Interesting to know, I wonder if your cartridge style Mobil 1 filter is of greater quality or better effectiveness vs. the canister style on my 98.

I'm not sure Mobil 1 filter has an internal check valve as the Mann/OEM filter to hold oil pressure to the lifters while starting up.

That's mainly what kind of information I'm looking for here. I know Mobil 1 is a very reputable brand of oil and that alot of people use the oil filters. But I'm wondering if the filters have the same check valve quality that the OEM/Genuine ones do...

As far as the filter goes, any name brand filter will do the same job, filtering contaminants out of the oil. Most of the time, multiple brands of filters are made by the same company, painted different colors and sold in different boxes. Generally, you are buying different name rather that a different product.
Did you change oils as well as the filter? If you switched to a synthetic oil, it may have cleaned out the accumulated gunk that kept the lifters quiet on cold start up. A change of filter brand would not cause this issue.

You've answered your own question here! Over several decades and many Volvo's I've only ever used Volvo oil filters as they have a check valve in them to prevent oil leak-down when you turn the engine off (according to Volvo). Especially with the hydraulic lifters it is more important than ever. I have never found an after-market filter that worked as well, and for the small insurance, to me ( a Scot!) it is cheap insurance.
Hopefully once you swap it out all will be quiet!
If someone out there has found a good 'alternative' filter with the same performance, good luck to you, but I still won't change!
Volvo used the same filter for probably near 40 years for good reason, and that is why most of their engines last so long IMO!

Volvo filters certainly do have a check valve as stated below, unless that is just Volvo talking up their product. I really don't think so due to the fact that once I switch to an aftermarket filter I begin to hear something I haven't ever heard in 60K miles.phat78ta wrote:confused_al wrote:I'm not sure Mobil 1 filter has a internal check valve as the Mann/OEM filter to hold oil pressure to the lifters while starting up.I'm pretty sure NO oil filter has a "check valve" in it to do this, but I could be wrong. The lifters hold their own pressure with the oil inside the lifter bodies themselves.

Yes, full oil change. I'm a Castrol High Mileage 5w30 guy in the winter but due to WalMart having a limited selection at the time I put in Pennzoil High Mileage 5w30.
I was using Full Synthetic for a while but wasn't happy with the motor noise and went to a "thicker" High Mileage oil afraid that synthetic just wasn't doing my 180K mile powerhouse much good. It is good oil but I feel that the car needs something more appropriate.
I also had my oil pan off changing my o rings a few weeks ago and there wasn't one ounce of sludge.

I hear ya, damn it. I wish I had a Volvo filter back when I changed the oil.scot850 wrote:You've answered your own question here!
