Hmm let's see now. What parts should we use as OEM only? This list may help others save themselves a LOT of repeating repairs.

Volvo '93-'00 850/V70

Front control arms
Cam seals
Sachs or Bilstein or Koni shocks only
Spring seats
Flame trap kits



If anyone would like to contribute to this thread please do so, or relate experiences where non-OEM have disappointed.

I'd say anything electrical i.e sensors:

-Mass Airflow Sensor
-Engine Coolant Temp Sensor
-Oxygen Sensors (OEM/proper Bosch equivalent)

However, I did replace my front control arms with FCP aftermarket ones, and have had no issues for 13,000+ miles. They seem to be very high quality.

Volvo Plug's- Yes I understand that others have had good experiences with other brands, but to be honest its just not worth wasting time dealing with misfires due to plugs.

Cap and Rotor, Stick with Bosch, trust me you will thank me and others who agree that These car's dislike anything other than OEM parts.

Oil Filters are another big one that I have personally noticed, anything than Mahle or MANN are just total garbage for these motor's.

I Highly recommend using Mobil-One Fully Synthetic oil mainly for Turbo charged models but I run it in every car I own, I have never had oil burn or leak since! and it hold's up to my "moments of total madness" :twisted:
There are ton's of other things that you really should not stray from, but I will let others have their point of views said. :mrgreen:

Tune up items commonly substituted to great regret:

Ignition Wires - Bougicord (OEM) or Genuine Volvo only, avoid aftermarket wires. The horsepower crowd will argue back, but unless you have a thoroughly modified engine including ECU work, don't play around here.

Spark Plugs - some stay strictly Genuine Volvo, others say OEM or Bosch Copper is fine. NA are a little more tolerant than the Turbos, I've had acceptable result from Bosch Platinum +2's - but honestly wouldn't try them again.

Oil filters - Mann only is advised, any aftermarket MUST have an internal check valve, K&N and Mobil 1 will suffice. Avoid the Fram Orange Can of Death like it's the plague - actually, that's exactly what they are.

JRL alludes to a really important point - OE versus OEM.

Most of the time, OE (Volvo blue box, aka Genuine Volvo) and OEM (same part direct from mfr) are equivalent.

The trouble comes in making sure you've got the right one.

So, in this case, ecbsykes and JRL are both right - OEM MAF is just fine. Aftermarket is not a good idea.

plug wires (bosch) (seems like IPD and other brands give lots of trouble in reviews I have read)
+1 on Spark Plugs

---> Oil Filter: Yes Mann and Mahle are good.
But I have been using Bosch Oil Filter (Bosch #3321) and no issues.
The Internal Anti-drain back valve is not important in the 850, S/V70 series because the oil filter is mounted upside down, so when engine is stopped, oil is not drained out.
The By-Pass Valve is present in all 3: Mann, Mahle, and Bosch 3321.

Actually Sachs is the OEM : $77/each.
I have had this for 2 years now, no issues.
