Evap canister question

My car has the charcoal canister up near the driver's wheel. I dropped it down to check the J hoses, I get a P0442 every 2 or 3 months. The hoses are actually in great shape. But the canister was connected to a line that disappears up under the fender, it is labeled "Air" on the canister. This line is old and hard and it broke.

What is the "Air" line for? Does it vent to the atmosphere or require a vacuum seal like the other lines?

I'll fix it, but if it doesn't need to be airtight I just use a barb connector or something, it is located in really difficult position to work with.

that line leads to an electrically operated valve that has to close for the tank leakage test to run. Hose problems there will cause codes associated with the evap system and tank leakage.

Is there an easy way to work with that line? Seems very difficult to reconnect, do you just mount the canister then reach up from underneath?

Just for closure: since I fixed this hose on top of the charcoal canister, the EVAP code has not showed up again.
