Replacing Tailgate Lock Assembly Wrong Part? 1998 V70R

The tailgate lock on my 1998 V70R broke. I think while it was open, it somehow got stuck in lock position, because when I closed it, it did not catch. It was late, and dark, and I stupidly tried again, just much harder. The end result is the lock broke apart.

I usually get parts from FCP, but after taking into account express shipping, it was not more expensive to have the dealer get it next day for me. As usual, they said they need the VIN to get the right part, which I provided. But when I took it apart to replace today, they don't look the same at all. Is this a case of one part superceding the other? If so, I'm not sure how to re-attach the linkages.

Below are the pics, first three are what I removed from vehicle, (marked 9187990) and last three are the new part (marked 9152238).

Your part number, 9187990, comes back as a good number for the latch motor (Chassis number 423918 and on). I show part number 8628197 as the part number for the lock itself for the same chassis series. The two pieces go together to form the entire assembly.

It depends on what piece broke internally as to which part you will need to fix your problem.

According to FCP, the part number 9152238 that the Volvo dealer provided is for chassis numbers TO 423917. Whereas 8628197 is for vehicles with chassis numbers FROM 423918, as you indicated. My chassis number is 511466.

The latch section of the assembly is what is broken. It is just flopping around loose. I think the motor side is good. Can the lock itself be purchased seperatley from the motor? When I search for 8628197, the results are for the whole asembly.

I think I will attempt to return the part to the Volvo dealer, then order from FCP, which is what I should have done in the first place!

As a side note, I recently installed a '98 v70 hatch on my 850 wagon. The latch worked fine the first few times then stopped catching. The part that catches the striker on the body just flopped around loosely.

If I'm reading everything right I think this is similar to your issue. I discovered that my old latch assembly from the 850 would not work. I was able to dismantle the latch assembly from the v70. What I discovered is that the part that catches the striker had some sort of plastic sleeve on it with a provision for a spring to attach to it. Over time and use the plastic wore down a broke under the spring's tension I assume. Part of the plastic sleeve became wedged in the mechanism preventing it from latching. I removed the plastic and the spring, put it back together and it works fine.

I just pulled a broken piece of plastic out without disasmbling the latch mechanism. Then inserted a flathead screwdriver and seemed to be able to reset the latch properly. Will need to try it out int the car, probably tomorrow.

Red, I had the same problem with my 99 V70, slammed the hatch down on locked latch and the cheap little plastic part that actuates the micro switch broke. The part I took off looked like your top pictures and the junkyard part I bought for $20 looked like the last pics. I was unable to use the existing hatch manual button rod on the junkyard unit. Finally I decided it would not defeat me and I made a prototype latch rod from a coat hanger , then bought a 2 buck 1/8 in threaded rod from home depot and bent the rod to fit and bent it 90 deg to fit the little white bearing, screwed on a nut and the plastic door button and it works fine. Was a hassle but the junk yard was miles from home so I did it the hard way.

Once I knew what I was dealing with in there, I didn't think twice about yanking anything I could see in there out so it wouldn't jam it up again. I got several more pieces of plastic, and a spring out without having to remove the rivets and open latch. Put it back in there, and it is working sans the power. Getting the wrong part was blessing in disguise, that's $180 in the bank!

I did call the yards first thing whn it happened, and as far as I could find, they were all "they pull", and they did not have the part. I assume the translation is, we have tailgates, but we're selling them whole.
