Not sure what the problem is, but before pulling stuff apart, I thought I'd ask for help to make sure I am tackling the right issue.
I bought the car a few months ago, but have as yet to use it much as I have too many cars in the drive to dig it out. When I do use it, there is a burning plastic/insulation smell when the fan is on. If I switch it off the smell dissipates. Logical reasoning is it is the fan motor, but this was only replaced by the previous owner about 2 years ago. Don't know the brand as it was fitted at a VW dealer he worked at. At the price ($250 CDN) I'm guessing it is not an OE part. There is no rumbling or squeeking from the fan motor. Is there anything else it could be??
If/when I pull the dash apart to remove the fan, is there anything much different to a 98 XC lower dash tray on the passenger side? The 2000 has an extra parcel shelf below the glove box. Is there a knee air-bag on this car or is it just the knee bolster as in the older cars?
Many thanks.
Neil.

Neil,
You most likely have overheating connections due to poor contact or a failed resistor.
Look at the attached procedure from VIDA - it is pretty simple and straightforward.
You want to inspect the integrity of the blower resistor as well as the electrical connections for discoloration or any other signs for overheating.

Many thanks for the guidance. Only wee problem is that the Vida procedure looks like it is for the 2nd Gen V70 (not the P80). Mine is the last of the 98-00 version.
Thanks,
Neil.

Your post title states 2000 V70R, and you profile shows 850 1993. Not sure what 98-00 version is.
If you specify the year, make and model (or VIN), I can hopefully pull that procedure for you.

Regent: OP stated he has a 2000.
The images you posted are for
later P2 models. If you pulled
it from overseas, that's probably
the reason. Post for a '99 and
it should be correct.

Sorry for confusing you Regent. In Canada the V70 R I own (along with a 1993 850 GLT, a 1998 V70XC and a 2006 XC70, guess I need to update my profile) is the first Gen V70 that ran here from 1998 and up to 2000.
If I could find a way to import a photo I would.
VIN# YV1LV60D2Y2651774
As BEJinFbk states if you look at a 1999 it should be ok. Only reason I'm questioning as I can pull a 1998 apart, but the under dash is different for my 2000 as it has a glove box AND an open shelf under it.
Appreciate all your help.
Thanks, Neil.

Neil and BEJinFbk, thanks for the info!
I will key this in as soon as I get to VIDA and post back - sometime this afternoon.
In the meantime,
Neil, if you want to upload an attachment (.jpeg or .pdf), hit the Full Editor Tab - just below the text box where you type your message and you will then be able to browse, attach and upload.

Many thanks for the added guidance on how to add a photo, so I did. Hopefully this now clarifies what the car looks like.

Take the inside of the glovebox out which gives access to the two T20 Torx bolts securing the lower knee panel, remove these and lower the panel, there are no airbags in this panel, one electrical connection for the floor light which you can disconnect to remove the panel from the car. Working through the glovebox "hole" you have direct access to the heater blower motor.
If the car has a passenger side airbag fitted in the dash it will be above the glovebox compartment, if you want to remove that make sure the battery is disconnect for twenty minutes before disconnecting the electrical connector (green and purple two pin plug) - You shouldn't need to disconnect/ remove the passenger side airbag (if fitted) to release and extract the fan blower - Mike
