99 S70 N/A MT - Need radiator help

99 S70
Non-Turbo, Manual transmission
185k, original owner

The radiator's plastic end on the passenger side has started leaking just below the top hose connection and I want to replace the radiator, which only has coolant connections. There are no oil or tranny fluid connections.

1. Are Volvo OE radiators still available for N/A MT vehicles, or will I need to buy one for AT and cap the extra ports?

2. I found these two radiators at Eeuroparts: 36000001G and 8603767. What is the difference between the two?

3. Are there other radiators that will fit my application and are built to last?

Note that I've changed fluid and hoses a few times, and neither is due at the moment. Any other wisdom regarding the radiator and replacing it is much appreciated.

This link from IPD may help your decision. They say to use an automatic radiator but the cooler ports just don't get used. I wouldn't use the radiator brand they have (like you I use Volvo where I can or Nissens).

FCP has the Nissens with the auto trans ports for about $140 US. This is what I am using on my Auto V70R.

I will try to find the part number for the manual trans for you so that may help your search if you prefer that.

Hey krenekj, most P80s use the same radiators if you're driving a MT or an AT. For example, if you have an AT, you just unscrew and attach transmission lines to their respective fittings and in a MT, you just leave those lines capped off. That's how my radiator looks.

But that's for the "normal" P80s. The question you have about those two different part numbers for OE Volvo radiators seems a little weird. (Moderator, Abscate, runs a thread on the "bastards" P80s that starting in 99, have weird parts here and there...)

Usually when I run into these kinds of issues I look on Tasca parts. They sometimes provide better information than some of our favorite suppliers. Let's see what information they provide!

I can't get those links to work, but Tasca, and Vida (Volvo parts system) no longer list a specific radiator for the manual trans. They list one on my older parts system with part # 8603767 for a 99 on manual and auto trans. Our wise friend's input above is exactly what they are doing, just leaving the auto trans lines connection capped off. They just go to a small cooler withing the end cap that sits in the coolant there.

As to the difference between the 2 part numbers I am not sure. Tasca lists the first part number for a turbo manual, and the 2nd for a non-turbo manual. Can't think why any difference if they both have the same outputs on them.

I recently went through this with my 99 S70 base M/T. I too was confused when I started researching this and was told to just use the AT variant and leave the AT coolant ports plugged. I was about to buy a AT radiator when I found a Nissens M/T (no extra ports) on Amazon. I bought that and it went in just fine. I was all excited to finally answer someone's post with good news and post you a link to the radiator I bought but it's listed as "unavailable."

Ugh.

You can't even find this on amazon at this point. This picture is available through "my orders" so I can't post a link to the item anymore.

The only Nissens one on Amazon for the s70 is the AT one at this point.

I get why they don't make MT specific ones anymore (how many manuals are out there anymore) but when I found a MT specific one I figured I'd grab it.

I'm three years in on a Nissens with the transmission cooler ports on my manual-equipped V70. No ill effects from ignoring the trans cooler ports entirely. I don't even remember if I plugged them or just left them open.

I put a new Nissens in my MT in 2013, replaced in 2017. The last one I bought from FCP so lifetime warranty!

I think I've reported the shortest lifetime ever, so don't freak about the brand. My new one started leaking at the right hand side plastic to radiator joint.

If you are really on a budget I could JB weld this one and deliver to you in Ambler in about two weeks. Labor on a NA isn't bad with no intercooler. I don't think anyone has tried this yet.

What wasn't clear in my posting was that I in fact was able to get the dedicated MT radiator. I put it in about 3 months ago. I was just complaining that I couldn't point someone else to my find.
My bad radiator was a Volvo brand and had so much patina on it that I suspect it was original. The car also had some unknown green coolant in it at the time.

Thank you for the quick replies.

Given the feedback and FCP's lifetime replacement policy, I ordered a Nissens 36000001 from them and will cap/ignore the AT ports as suggested. I would have liked to find one w/o the AT ports, but it seems that supply has been exhausted. I'll update this thread after the installation.
