['98 C70] Length of tie rods

Post by SvenGWK »

I'd like to order the tie rods, but I'm actually a little confused right now. I understood that there were differences between the SMI and TRW systems. But if I e.g. search for tie rods with SMI system I get a lot of different lengths listed.
Which length is the correct one?

Sven, the outer tie rods for our cars are the same:

For example, here's an outer tie rod:

It's the inner tie rod you need to pay attention to. There's an SMI rack and a TRS rack. Usually you can tell by the boot on your inner tie rod. But, better is to look at your vehicle plate. Or to look at your rack.

IPD has a great explanation for this information here:
https://www.ipdusa.com/techtips/10015/w ... it-tell-me

So, for example, here's an inner tie rod:

1998 Volvo S70
Position: Front Inner, SMI - Product Plate Marked "5"

or

1998 Volvo S70
Position: Front Inner, TRW- Product Plate Marked "4"

Of course, if your steering rack has been replaced, it could be either one!

Good luck figuring it out!

Thank you, i have now ordered different tie rods to be on the safe side.
What fits will be built in. The shop has a 90 day return guarantee, so I have no risk.
