Volvo Repair Database 1998 V70 GLT 19T Build

Post by bmdubya1198 »

It's time to see my first Volvo make some power! I'm not one to do "build threads", but I figured for this car, I had to post something. Once my V70R moves up to the K24, I'll probably post a big one (and maybe detail the manual swap process), but we'll see how that goes!
As some of you know, I bought this car back in 2015 as my first car for $300, and rebuilt it with my dad. It had some front end damage that we fixed, then spent 2 months diagnosing a transmission issue... which turned out to be a broken connector  .
I daily drove this car up until August of this year, when I finally sold it to focus on my V70R (which turned into focusing on my several other cars and never getting anything done, but that's another story  ). The current owner and I keep in touch, and he's put his trust in me to take care of maintenance and performance modifications. I'm honored to be able to continue to work on the car that taught me so much of what I know about Volvos and cars in general!

So onto the build... it's a bone stock 1998 V70 GLT. 2.4L LPT N motor, 13G turbo. I started by replacing the timing belt, tensioner, idler, and water pump the other day, and just last night I got the 19T mounted up with the original straight flange exhaust housing. Yes, an angled flange would flow better, but we're going to stick with the straight flange for now to work with an OBX downpipe.

Now for the parts list... (and where the parts can be found)
TD04HL-19T turbo (2000 V70R)
OBX Straight flange 3" downpipe
Green injectors (S60R/V70R)
NA intake manifold and throttle body w/ 960 throttle plate ('98 S70/V70 NA)
Snabb IC piping coupler to TB (for larger TB)
S90/V90 MAF housing (1998 S90)
NA cams ('95 850 NA)
Deatschwerks DW200 fuel pump
NGK BKR6E plugs
M4.4 tuned by Calvin Sonniksen at Sovvagn Motorwerke in Vista, CA

I'm about halfway through the installation of everything, just waiting on an iPd cam adjustment tool, the Snabb coupler, and the tune from Calvin. I'm really excited to see how the tune goes, I've heard great things about his work and I've been interested to try it out!

And the important part... here are some pictures of the progress thus far!

Yup, not a lot of ‘98s have that. I think my cousin’s wagon had it too, actually. I can check, that engine’s still sitting in my garage.

It seems to be a tossup for '98s. Most people say their '98 has a hydraulic tensioner, but most that I've seen in person are mechanical.

Maybe we just see the rare ones...

Engine serial numbers up to and including 1266127: Hydraulic Tensioner.
Engine serial numbers 1266128 and above: Mechanical Tensioner.

You cannot switch from one to the other, there are difference on the front of the block.

Oh yeah, it should be quick! I can't wait to drive it and get to tuning!

Little update... not too much today, I was preoccupied by selling my Miata (sad to see it go, but I need the money more than the car! Plus I'm too tall for it  ).
I pulled the intake manifold this morning, but I can't find an M10x1.0 tap locally to tap for the two barbs on the NA intake manifold that the turbo intake manifold requires. Going to look tomorrow, if not I'll order one and move onto the cam install.
I attempted to port match the turbo intake throttle body, but I don't have the patience! Plus it makes a HUGE mess of aluminum shavings... not comfortable on the skin.
The only difference between the manifolds is that the turbo has two extra vacuum ports and a smaller opening for the throttle body. Options are to add two barbs to the NA manifold or port match the gasket on the turbo manifold. This is assuming both manifolds are for a '98. Older ones are different, I believe.

I also installed the 960 throttle plate into the NA throttle body. Just look at the size difference between the turbo and NA throttles!

 I'm glad to finally put together a thread for something like this! I usually don't bother taking pictures because my hands are filthy and I tend to forget. I know my buddy will appreciate seeing it, I've been sending him pictures through the process.
