1999 s70 Evita ignition keytumbler problem

Poor kid. First day of first job this week, she gets in and the ignition key locks up.

She manages to get it working, well done.

I get over there last night and find..

Key goes in reluctantly and sometimes won’t retract. Every once in I awhile it does the 360 spin. The shifter seems to be working normally and is releasing the key, I think. Button is not sticking.

I had a little trouble with this car a year ago.

I have to be really careful with this car as the lock controller won’t sleep, so I cannot have new keys made, since I can’t chip them. I’m hoping I can get the tumblers out amd turn it into a keyless ignition car.

Yagger can add keys and fobs over the internet if you have the R-ID & Seed-ID . I know he has re-manufactured stuff. He might be able to sell you what you need with the required IDs needed to program them to the car.

This car has a wierd bus problem, andVIDA won’t let you add keys until the bus is quiet. I have three keys for the car but pretty much have to treat it with eggs

I will reach out to him but I’ve Been warned I could brick this thing easily.

I had the spinning issue, but it was simply down to very worn key profile. Problem was the fix is what you can't do. Swap the keys. You mention you have 3 keys. Do they all have a problem?

Another option is to take an existing coded key and hide it up in the dash and then get a couple of regular un-coded keys made.

I am assuming you have tried just spraying it with WD40 with one of those little red tube thingy's into the key slot in case it is just a build up of crud?

If you can do without the car for a 7 - 10 day. You could send him the CEM and keys. Have him do it on his bench.

Deep knowledge question

Can anyone tell me if I remove all the tumblers from the key of any key will then turn and unlock the steering and crank the car?

Im in a no-crime area, and of course the 1999 immob is pretty robust, so no fear of car being stolen. Its also parked next to high value targets.

As you know well, my understanding of 'electricery' is not the best. However, the key tumbler is just a mechanical item to prevent the tumbler section turning if the correct key is not inserted. The issues will be:

1) By-passing the antenna. Fixing a key in place under the dash near to the antenna will do this.
2) The tumblers need to turn to enable the electrical portion to contact to switch the system on. This is where my knowledge is more flakey. Can the electrical portion be bypassed somehow to a push button to start the car? The issue is that once the button is released the engine will shut down again. Can you remove the tumblers so the key can be glued in place or somehow mechanically fixed in place to allow the switching of the electrical portion and even starting?

Did you try your other keys to see if they are all affected? If you find that one works better than the others, then can you get a basic manual key cut and just leave an original chipped key in place hidden?
