Hi Neil,
Adding folding mirrors to your car is not a problem - I've done it with my V70 and I really appreciate them in tight parking situations.
After adding the hardware (button and mirror), you will need to update your CEM's configuration to enable the feature.
The configuration information does not differentiate between XC70 or V70 folding mirrors - both models operate the same way.
See the following post about the caveat of removing CCM buttons while the battery is still powering the car:

Edit to add:
To change your configuration, you need to obtain the CEM's PIN (or physically remove the CEM from the car, which is not fun)
The mirrors (part 6/63 in the Volvo wiring manual) are controlled by the DDM/PDM (door modules on LS CAN)

Well that is great news. I have had a quick look over your info and the links to the thread which is excellent by all involved.

So, if I use an original correct button for the mirror option, does this make the process any simpler?

The only part I do not understand is about the CEM and the PIN info. I know the CEM is a true pain on these car to access.

Once I have sourced suitable parts, I will probably come back on this.

Thanks again!

Neil.

Neil,

Using the correct button will look more OEM but you can use any button if you change its internal ID.

The PIN code of your CEM is required to make any software changes.
Volvo assigned one to each car when they left the factory.
This is what more or less locks you to the dealer network for electronic repairs/upgrades.
Volvo is not unique in this respect - many other brands have similar systems.
See this legendary thread for more Volvo-specific information:

I have a couple of leftover (used) parts that might be of interest to you.
I'll send you a PM with the details.

I have now by a fluke got a set of folding mirrors and the center dash section complete with the operation button. However they are from an 07 V70 so they have the turn signal repeater in them. Does anyone know if this was an 07 year option only or if the 05- year harnesses were the same and it is a programmable option?

Got good news from the dealer yesterday. They can get the software for the mirrors. They can't guarantee it will work due to the unknowns of the parts. Their kind offer is for charging only for the software , $65 CDN (about $50 US) if it does not work as they are charged by Volvo either way. If successful I then pay 30 mins labor. I'm ok with that.

Now I am looking at the wiring harness for the 2007 v's the 2006 as the 07 has the additional turn signal repeater. These modern Volvo wiring diagrams are not much help. I have found 2-3 variants for each year, but the connector pin layouts are mirrored to that of the pictures given on the diagrams. Not only that there are only 8 wires that I can see for the mirror needed or shown, but no sign of a ground or explanation why there are 18 wires in the connector which just goes to the mirror?

There are a couple of wire color change, but from what I see only on the LHS mirror.

Oh, fun!

Today I took the center stack apart using a helpful YouTube video. It was only helpful as far as separating the radio from the heater controls, but no info on how to access the button I needed. Turned out to be fairly simple and a case of carefully prizing off the plastic surround panel for the buttons and sliding out the button.

The radio was cleaned and is off to my mechanic buddy for his 06 XC70!
