S40 2001 cold idle problem. Help. Topic is solved

My wifes s40 won't idle when first started. RPMs droop down below 400 and dies unless you hold your foot on the gas. At some point after starting the rpm jumps to about 800 like nothing happend. It's been doing it a couple of weeks but it's gotten worse lately and now it takes 3-5 mins before idle becomes normal.

Any ideas? It is hard to find documentation on this car!

Jim, I'm having a very similar problem. mine usuallyl either hesitates at idle, then roars back to life, or it will simply die. the dealership has already replaced the speed sensor and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to no avail. Still waiting for what they're going to try next, but I'll keep the forum posted.

Drain Fuel filter

perhaps Faulty air inlet valve or MAF??
