I'm going to attempt to do the DD install and post back pictures / issues when done (probably in a new thread).

Double DIN or nothing. I think the Single DIN just looks cheap with the pocket underneath.

I just installed a Pioneer Double DIN radio in my 2000 V70XC. The radio I used is the Pioneer AVH-3200BT. I also have the optional navigation unit.

https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-AVH-P3200 ... B00385I7TU

I couldn't find a kit to install the radio so I made my own. The radio was previously installed in a 1995 Accord and I still had the fit kit from that on the radio. I cut all the tabs off the plastic fit kit and realized that it would fit snuggly except for the two rails that the original Volvo radio attaches too. I cut all the tabs of the fit kit. I then measured out the height of the two rails in the opening and using a dremel, I cut the same size slots into the plastic on the side of the radio. Once this was done, it took a little tweaking but it fit and is in nice and tight. there was enough room to hide the navigation until behind the radio and run the antenna

If you want more detailed pictures of the install PM me but I have attached one of the final install. Let me know what you think!

So are there any mounting kits necessary for double DIN radios? Or just Dremeling down the area surrounding the mounting. I have a '96 Volvo 850 with the SC-710 stock radio currently.

I think it depends on the double DIN radio you plan on putting in. I would measure both just to be sure if you need a fit kit or not. The pioneer I installed fit just into the original slot and using the fit kit from my accord it fit perfectly except for the little spot in the bottom I need to fill.

I understand this is an old post but my question is about THEFT.

Many many years ago, thieves would break in the car to steal the hand-held GPS (Tom-Tom, Magellan etc.). Fast forward 15 years later, thieves no longer break in car to steal these hand-held GPS devices, simply because there is no "black" aftermarket for these things, thanks to the invention of the smart phones with GPS.

Having said that, I am considering getting rid of the factory radio (SC-816) and replace with Double-DIN with GPS features. Used units are about $200 on ebay and new is about $450+. I'd probably go with used but...my main concern is THEFT!!! I hate dealing with smashed window, police report, insurance company. Basically a waste of time and hassles etc.

So, the $1M question for you guys: do you think Double-DIN is a target for thieves?

I just installed a single-din Alpine deck in my S70 last night with an Infinity Basslink.

The main reason I went with a single over a double is that all of the kids want double-din, so if something is going to get stolen that's what they are after.

I put something like This In the V70 when the OEM unit packed up, it's been in the car over 4 years with no issue, to be honest when the screen is off it doesn't look like anything fancy from outside the car. Cheap and not a bad unit with lots of features - Mike
