1990 740 Turbo-engine wont crank not signs of start

Post by coyotex91 »

when i turn the key over all the electrical seems fine but when i turn the key to the last position the engine wont crank and no signs of it wanting to start. i have changed the starter and solenoid and still no luck. could it be the fuel pump or the safety neutral switch?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The symptoms are pointing to a bad electrical portion of the ignition switch. When you get to the start position try jiggling the key around.

thanks for you quick reply. i forgot to mention that i also replaced the ignition switch and that did not work as well sorry for leaving that out. knowing that what other possible things can it be. does the safety neutral switch sound reasonable?
thanks again.

Having read what you had replaced I forgot to ask a crucial question. We sometimes have problems with UK/US terminology so when you say "the engine wont crank and no signs of it wanting to start" do you mean that the starter motor turns but the engine won't fire or does the starter motor not turn at all?

Attached is a general starter motor check list and how to test for problems when the starter motor isn't turning. One of the most important things is cleanliness of the battery leads, especially where the negative lead is attached to the body.

The safety neutral switch on the 740 can't be adjusted but should be checked to ensure none of the leads has become detached.

I gathered that when you mentioned it in your first post. The trouble shooting is for both transmissions.

The switch is in the centre console at the base of the shift lever. On some models the switch is adjustable but not on the 740.

If the starter motor isn't turning the distributer, rotor and fuel pump can't be the porblem.

What voltage did you get at the starter solenoid spade terminal?
