I'm a new member here and have been helped by this thread.

I removed my ABS module and sent it out to a re-builder to let them open the case and re-solder the connections as I don't know how to do that. I can fix things around the house but I didn't want to make a mistake and have to buy a 1000 dollar dealer part. Mine was fixed for 35 dollars including shipping.

All I can offer is a short video of how to remove the ABS module. I hope it helps others and encourages them to do it themselves.

Here is a link to the vid, I put a link to MVS in the video description. Please be kind, I'm not a mechanic or expert.

Hi all, Owner of 3, S70's
My 2000 with 140k started hesitating and banging into drive and reverse, then slipping out of gear on the highway for quite a while, then recently I got the dash lights. so I had the codes read and it threw 7 of them.
ECM-530D, (DTC in Transmission Control Module)
ECM-510 (Vehicle speed signal (VSS)
TCM-001f Vehicle Speed sensor (VSS) signal missing , perm Fault
TCM-0023 Engine speed (RPM ) sensor, signal missing perm fault
ABS-0010 Wheel sensor left front signal missing intermittent fault
ABS-0093 Control module communication
ABS-0092 Control module communication

Dash lights were," flashing arrow, abs, tracs, cel."

First to deal with was the Transmission, so I got a used one and installed it in the yard on my back like the old days. Before I fired it up I stopped at a local Volvo dealership and inquired about having them put the transmission into adaptive learning mode. (which is in the service manual)
The head mechanic told me, “it was highly likely that the Trans would NOT work” because even though they are both AW55’s, only certain serial numbers will behave the same. Even new downloaded software would not work. He said the Vin Numbers will not help in matching the units only the actual serial numbers off the units themselves will do. Yikes!!! I requested a match from the salvage yard by model and year certainly not serial number. Well it was in already so I had no choice but to roll the dice.
The install was fun and went flawless. I had the codes cleared and drove 100 miles with perfect shifting and no lights. Then out of the blue I get "limp home mode” with dashes on the odometer and no speedo. Again I got the Flashing arrow, ABS, Tracs and CEL. But the trans is shifting perfectly. I shut off the car and restarted it. It drove normal except for the dash lights. This happened several times.
Either he was right and I got the wrong unit or he was hitting me low for not paying the big bucks for a trans exchange ...........the next few paragraphs will clear that up..

The Greatest Volvo mechanic in NJ Is Nick Fanizzi from Highbloom Auto in Nutley. I called him and he told me that this problem is from the ABS. So I found this post and did the ABS resolder.
Most of these posts don’t mention the Flashing arrow for ABS failure but my car displayed it.

FYI, In the 2000 S70 SE the #4 fuse is for the ABS. After removing the heater tube from the exhaust manifold and the air cleaner box, all the screws were easy to reach. Just hold your hand on the top of the ratchet, pressing down so it keeps the socket squarely on the bolt and no stripping will occur.
My unit had no retention clips on the cover and no protective covering over the board. Use the technique that’s posted here for removing the cover. Just take some long sheetrock screws and grind the heads down on your bench grinder so the heads are the same diameter of the steel standoffs. Then when you screw it down, the cover will be able to come up past the screws when you break the seal. And remember patients!!! Apply gentle progressive pressure and you will hear the bond releasing, keep applying pressure gently and it will slowly raise up. Do the same to all 4 sides lifting the cover small amounts at a time until it comes up beyond the screws you have securing it.

This solder repair does require a steady hand and good eyes. Hit all the “through the board” connections to be safe. Mine was definitely bad around the multiple pins in the large group in the photo. The cracks were obvious with a magnifying glass. The correct way to do this is to desolder, then resolder each pin. That assures a good bond and no oxidation ruining your new joint.
In it went, and after clearing the codes I drove 300 miles and its perfect!!
Thanks to all for posting and sharing this information, And thanks to MATT for this wonderful site. Without it, I would not be able to maintain my cars.

Ozark Lee.....
Wanted to thank you for your efforts in documenting and sharing the DIY ABS repair thread. As you can see it has helped many of us to repair our own modules and save ourselves a lot of money at the dealership.
Just to let you know your time and expertise is greatly appreciated amongst us Volvo-nite's

Hi!
I have a 2001 V70 T5M and in the last few days my abs light has come on and off intermitantly. Prior to this, last week I had the Dealer do a software upgrade reflash. Since that time, the cruise control, has been intermittant as well.
However, the car runs fine.
Are these things related?

thanks in advance
Rob
